SUMMARY:Introduction to Structural Racism Fall Intensive 2020
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Community-Campus Partnerships for Health: Institutional and systemic racism are a direct result of laws\, policies\, and practices. Inequities have been systematically integrated into the fabric of our society across every sector – law\, education\, housing\, health. As systems are built\, they too can be dismantled. Community-Campus Partnerships for Health (CCPH) has emerged as a leader in exploring the role of partnerships in addressing structural racism. The intensive examines historic and contemporary manifestations of institutional and systemic inequities. \nThe format for the “Introduction to Structural Racism” Intensive is designed for participants to look through the lens of equity and have a mindful and heartfelt real-life experience. Our training can be adapted to multiple formats – virtual and in-person. The overall purpose remains the same— to provide participants with a historical understanding of structural inequalities\, systemic racism\, and skills needed to work in partnership to address these issues. \nWhat happens at the end of a CCPH experience is also unique. We ensure participants leave with tools they can use to build a clear framework for a plan to operationalize skills learned. Having the skills needed to work in partnerships to address these issues results in a big increase in the success of their program activities. Participants also have access to the Participant Webpage where they can access the community forum\, an online platform to connect\, share work\, and continue the conversation beyond the intensive. \nTo learn more\, head over the website here.

SUMMARY:ADVANCING EQUITY THROUGH PUBLICLY ENGAGED SCHOLARSHIP: TRANSFORMING FACULTY REWARD POLICIES & PRACTICES
DESCRIPTION:ABOUT THE SYMPOSIUM \n\n\n\nTo serve all members of our society\, our colleges and universities must put Equity at the center of their work\, not just as a desired outcome\, but also as integral to the process of education – how we do what we do. To serve their public purpose\, our higher education institutions must also commit deeply to Civic and Community Engagement in teaching and research.  Our faculty reward systems (including promotion\, tenure or long-term contracts for non-tenure-track faculty\, and post-tenure review) shape whom we attract\, support\, and retain as faculty.  This symposium will explore how faculty reward systems can be structured to support both of these critical and intersecting themes in higher education–Equity and Public Engagement.  How might we transform the culture\, policies and practices of our reward systems to recruit and retain the faculty we need?  Sessions throughout the day will begin to address these questions and will include breakout sessions targeted at faculty and campus executives who are essential to the process. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAGENDA \n\n\n\n10:00 AM – 11:30 AM: Opening and Keynote Speaker \n Framing of the Day | Dr. Renee White\, Wheaton College\nJust Faculty Evaluation: What We Can and Should Do Now | Dr. KerryAnn O’Meara\, University of Maryland \n11:30 AM – 12:30 PM: Concurrent Breakout Sessions \n\nSession 1: Guiding Your Institution toward Equity: Re-envisioning Policy\, Practice\, and Culture in Faculty Reward Systems \n\nPanelists:\n\nNoemi Custodia-Lora\, Northern Essex Community College\nMargaret N. SUMMARY:Introduction to Community Organizing for Community Engagement Professionals
DESCRIPTION:Community Engagement Professionals often have multiple roles\, both formal and informal\, many of which require them to organize others (students\, other faculty/staff\, community members) to advance mission\, programming\, and institutional change efforts. While typical training and academic preparation focuses on disciplines and project management\, it overlooks our role as organizers. The goal of this training is to provide an overview of the theory and practice of community organizing as a framework and tool for activating change within and beyond campus\, specifically for enhancing the work of community engagement staff and faculty. Participants will be provided a brief overview of various elements of community organizing campaigns (including identifying goals and purpose\, relationship building\, communicating and collaborating with stakeholders and constituents\, mapping power and assets\, strategizing and problem solving\, and taking collective action) alongside some of the strategies and tools needed to go from conceptualization to action.  \nParticipants will have the opportunity to convene in breakout rooms to connect with colleagues and develop ideas for applying the framework to their own work. Participants will be encouraged to articulate an organizing project that would fulfill some part of their own work responsibilities or personal passions so they can consciously apply the organizing framework and tools to it during the session — and then in real life when they return to work. The facilitators will also offer an optional follow-up meeting in early fall for participants to check in about progress and challenges in integrating the principles and practices of Community Organizing into these new or existing projects.

SUMMARY:Alternative Break Citizenship School
DESCRIPTION:The Alternative Break Citizenship schools (ABCs) are experiential training sessions that provide college student and staff leaders the knowledge\, skills\, and connections they need to start or strengthen a quality alternative break program. \nPart conference\, part model alternative break\, the ABCs combine workshops and planning sessions with an alternative break experience. \nThe result is a dynamic learning opportunity that underscores learning in workshops and fostering connection with student and staff leaders from campuses nationwide. \nIn light of coronavirus\, we are forgoing our traditional four in-person conferences spread around the country and are excited about the opportunity to adapt to a virtual format. We will explore ways to continue service learning and alternative breaks through online experiences and hyperlocal service to ensure the safety of our communities.  \nPlease join us on Zoom for the Virtual ABCs!

SUMMARY:Civic Learning and Democratic Engagement Meeting
DESCRIPTION:CLDE 2020 Is Going Virtual!\nFollowing increased and overwhelming concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic and its associated effects across our country\, and driven by our responsibility to ensure the best interests of our CLDE\, ADP & NASPA community\, we are moving the 2020 Civic Learning and Democratic Engagement (CLDE) Meeting\, originally scheduled for June 3-6\, 2020 in Minneapolis\, MN\, to a Virtual Conference. The health\, well-being\, and safety of our members\, our communities\, and our staff are of utmost importance. This was not an easy decision\, but we felt this was the best way to proceed during such an unprecedented global situation. \nAASCU’s American Democracy Project (ADP) and NASPA are committed to advancing the civic engagement movement in higher education. Join us for our first ever virtual meeting which brings together faculty\, student affairs professionals\, senior campus administrators\, students and community partners. Together we will ensure that students graduate from our colleges and universities–both public and private–prepared to be the informed\, engaged citizens that our communities and our democracy need. \nThis year’s virtual event will take place over three different dates: \nJune 4 – 5\, July 24\, and September 11\, 2020 \nParticipants will have opportunities to network and develop their civic-minded thinking and practices through engaging plenary sessions\, informative general interest sessions\, interactive virtual workshops\, and roundtable discussions. \nUse this hashtag to see what others are sharing #CLDE20 during the virtual conference! \nOur Virtual #CLDE20 will include plenary speakers\, concurrent sessions\, and much more\, and we regret that we are unable to accept all of the programs originally slotted for the in-person CLDE20. We contacted every speaker who was originally accepted\, and many e-mails may have been filtered into the spam folder. If you have not been contacted by us to prepare your session for the Virtual CLDE20\, we hope that you resubmit your session for our next in-person gathering\, CLDE21 in Boston\, and we look forward to seeing you at our Virtual #CLDE20. Thank you!

SUMMARY:WHAT’S NEXT FOR DACA AND DREAMERS? HEAR FROM JOSE VARGAS\, LEADING VOICE ON IMMIGRANT HUMAN RIGHTS
DESCRIPTION:Jose Antonio Vargas will deliver a plenary webinar on ACE Engage® July 23 at 1 p.m. EDT to keep the conversation going about what the higher education community can do for Dreamers\, young individuals brought to this country as children\, in the wake of the recent Supreme Court decision rejecting the Trump administration’s actions to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. \nRegister now on Engage to hear him deliver his talk\, “DACA and Dreamers: A Conversation With Jose Antonio Vargas\,” which is generously supported by Fidelity Investments. Patrick Vaughan\, senior vice president managing director and higher education practice leader for the tax exempt market at Fidelity Investments\, will give opening remarks. \nVargas is a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist\, Emmy-nominated filmmaker\, and Tony-nominated producer. A leading voice for the human rights of immigrants\, he founded the non-profit media and culture organization Define American. He is the author of the best-selling memoir\, “Dear America: Notes of an Undocumented Citizen\,” and most recently he co-produced Heidi Schreck’s acclaimed Broadway play “What the Constitution Means to Me\,” which was nominated for two 2019 Tony awards\, including “Best Play.” \nIn 2011\, the New York Times Magazine published his groundbreaking essay chronicling his life in America as an undocumented immigrant. A year later\, he appeared on the cover of Time magazine worldwide with fellow undocumented immigrants as part of a follow-up cover story he wrote. He then produced and directed “Documented\,” an autobiographical documentary feature film that aired on CNN\, and “White People\,” an Emmy-nominated television special that aired on MTV and examines what it means to be young and white in a demographically changing America. \nThe Supreme Court ruling is not the end of the story for DACA recipients and other Dreamers. As ACE President Ted Mitchell said in a statement\, “In the wake of this momentous and welcome ruling\, Congress must finally act to give permanent legislative protection to Dreamers.” Dreamers still face many challenges such as the lack of a path to citizenship and ineligibility for student aid granted by the CARES Act during the COVID-19 pandemic. For more information\, check out RemembertheDreamers.org\, a website launched by ACE and a coalition of partners to serve as a resource for students\, families\, and higher education institutions. The website contains informational resources\, personal stories of Dreamers\, and ways to take action such as by contacting Congress to ask for a permanent legislative solution. \nSpeaking of Congress\, keep up with the latest legislative developments and other public policy news impacting higher education with ACE’s Public Policy Pop-up: July Edition taking place July 28 on Engage. Terry Hartle and Jon Fansmith will discuss Congress’ agenda throughout the summer and leading up to election season\, and if there are any new developments on DACA\, you will be sure to hear it from them.

SUMMARY:Living Room Conversations: Coronavirus: Race in the Time of Corona
DESCRIPTION:At this point\, Race and the Coronavirus can not be separated. In our efforts to feel like we can do something to protect ourselves\, some of us have succumbed to our baser instincts. This is evident in the ways some Americans have treated people of Asian descent or how people of African descent are being treated in China. By talking about race in light of the Coronavirus/COVID-19 impact on our world\, we are acknowledging awareness of the importance of this continued work. As we develop our ability and capacity to communicate across differences\, we also become better global problem solvers. If we can take anything from this season in history\, let it be this–that we are interconnected and need one another to survive in challenging times and to thrive as a global community.

SUMMARY:COVID-19\, Systemic Racism\, and the Responses of HBCUs: A Virtual Town Hall Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Speakers: \nMakola M. Abdullah\, President of Virginia State University  \nMary Schmidt Campbell\, President of Spelman College \nC. Reynold Verret\, President of Xavier University of Louisiana \nGilda Barabino\, President-elect of Olin College of Engineering (Moderator)\nHistorically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are among the nation’s most vital and vibrant institutions\, serving the educational needs of hundreds of thousands of students\, advancing the full spectrum of human knowledge\, and invigorating the cultural\, social\, and economic horizons of the regions they serve. And today\, these universities are at the forefront of the fight against COVID-19\, researching treatments\, keeping their states and communities informed\, and treating patients at academic medical centers.  They are also at the forefront of the nation’s struggles against institutionalized discrimination\, systemic inequality\, and anti-Black racism that are being brought to bear every day in the forms of demonstrations and advocacy in most U.S. communities. \nHow have HBCUs responded to the COVID-19 pandemic and to the recent events surrounding the murder of George Floyd?  As HBCU presidents look toward resuming in-person classes in the fall\, what have they learned from the COVID-19 crisis\, how will their institutions evolve as a result\, and what might that mean for the future of HBCUs in America?  How will HBCUs adapt to the serious financial challenges likely to arise in states and the nation in the months ahead as a consequence of COVID-19? What are HBCU campus leaders doing in preparation for a stronger and higher-profile role in terms of advocacy and leadership in directly addressing anti-Black racism in this country? \nPlease join the presidents of three of the nation’s premier HBCUs as they discuss COVID-19 and issues of racial injustice. This event is hosted by the National Academies’ Board on Higher Education and Workforce and Issues in Science and Technology and sponsored by the Kresge Foundation and the U.S. Department of Defense HBCU/MI Program. \nPlease contact John Veras (jveras@nas.edu) for questions.

SUMMARY:8th International Symposium on Service-Learning (ISSL)
DESCRIPTION:Critical Service-Learning Across the Globe: Transforming Teaching into Social Action\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nUniversity of Nicosia\, June 9 – 12 \, 2020 \nSYMPOSIUM PURPOSE \nTransformation has become a central discussion theme in the higher education landscape worldwide. Forecasts reveal that higher education institutions might become virtual entities that compete for survival\, which will render face-to-face interaction of the lecture hall redundant. \nOut-of-classroom learning spaces will likely become more important as students will learn in their own communities. Service-learning is a transformative pedagogy that emphasizes out of classroom experiences as a learning space\, the community as a textbook and where theory becomes practice. \nThe purpose of the 8th International Symposium on Service-Learning is to focus on transitions in higher education and the role that critical service-learning plays in social transformation. One of the main areas of focus will be on student and faculty delivery of critical service-learning experiences and becoming agents of positive change for their communities and universities. We will learn more about the significant role that service-learning plays in students becoming more engaged and active citizens\, faculty teaching in more critical and collaborative ways\, and the community growing into living knowledge incubators. These focal points will be threaded throughout a variety of presentation types and formats to allow for meaningful dialogue among academics\, community partners\, students\, and other professionals.

SUMMARY:Pen to Paper Writing Retreat
DESCRIPTION:A retreat focused on preparing scholars to publish their community engaged work. \nPEN TO PAPER 2020 JUST ANNOUNCED! REGISTRATION OPENS MARCH 16\, 2020. \n\nPen to Paper is an academic writing retreat designed to provide time\, space\, and resources to guide faculty\, professional staff\, graduate students\, and community partners working on manuscripts related to service-learning and community engagement. \nThe two and a half-day retreat provides participants with time to discuss ideas with and receive feedback from editors\, receive mentoring from retreat facilitators\, share ideas with peers\, and write. \nEach year attendance is intentionally kept to a minimum in order to foster personal connections between participants\, editors\, and senior faculty coaches. The small group also provides the space participants need to focus on engaged scholarship. \nThe Retreat is organized in such a way as to offer participants two tracks—the Ready to Publish track and Ready to Write track. \n\nThe Ready to Publish track is for those who have a complete or nearly complete manuscript. These participants will receive feedback from journal editors and learn more about the various avenues available to publish their work.\nThe Ready to Write track is for those whose research is complete or nearly complete and have a writing plan\, but who have not yet begun the writing process. These participants will focus on developing their writing strategy and receive guidance as they begin the writing process.\n\nIndiana Campus Compact encourages faculty\, community engagement professionals\, graduate students\, and community members who are interested in further developing their community engagement practices and research methodology to attend the Colloquium on High-Impact Community Engagement Practices before attending Pen to Paper. \nPen to Paper 2020 will take place Monday\, May 18 to Wednesday May 20\, 2020 at an outdoor education center in east-central Michigan. Participants will enjoy either single or double-occupancy\, modest hotel-style accommodations situated on a wooded 1\,100-acre property. This serene setting offers opportunity for participants to focus on their writing.

Conference registration opens soon. \nBe Inspired. \nJoin us for an in-state\, substantive\, thought-provoking\, interactive\, meeting of the minds from across all sectors and professional roles within Ohio post-secondary education. We will come together to examine and be informed by promising practices for improving undergraduate education and student success in Ohio.
