SUMMARY:Pen to Paper Writing Retreat
DESCRIPTION:A retreat focused on preparing scholars to publish their community engaged work. \nPEN TO PAPER 2020 JUST ANNOUNCED! REGISTRATION OPENS MARCH 16\, 2020. \n\nPen to Paper is an academic writing retreat designed to provide time\, space\, and resources to guide faculty\, professional staff\, graduate students\, and community partners working on manuscripts related to service-learning and community engagement. \nThe two and a half-day retreat provides participants with time to discuss ideas with and receive feedback from editors\, receive mentoring from retreat facilitators\, share ideas with peers\, and write. \nEach year attendance is intentionally kept to a minimum in order to foster personal connections between participants\, editors\, and senior faculty coaches. The small group also provides the space participants need to focus on engaged scholarship. \nThe Retreat is organized in such a way as to offer participants two tracks—the Ready to Publish track and Ready to Write track. \n\nThe Ready to Publish track is for those who have a complete or nearly complete manuscript. These participants will receive feedback from journal editors and learn more about the various avenues available to publish their work.\nThe Ready to Write track is for those whose research is complete or nearly complete and have a writing plan\, but who have not yet begun the writing process. These participants will focus on developing their writing strategy and receive guidance as they begin the writing process.\n\nIndiana Campus Compact encourages faculty\, community engagement professionals\, graduate students\, and community members who are interested in further developing their community engagement practices and research methodology to attend the Colloquium on High-Impact Community Engagement Practices before attending Pen to Paper. \nPen to Paper 2020 will take place Monday\, May 18 to Wednesday May 20\, 2020 at an outdoor education center in east-central Michigan. Participants will enjoy either single or double-occupancy\, modest hotel-style accommodations situated on a wooded 1\,100-acre property. This serene setting offers opportunity for participants to focus on their writing.

SUMMARY:Your Voice Matters Cleveland: Shaping Civic Engagement in the 21st Century
DESCRIPTION:**This is NOT an OCC event – for more information please visit the link in this post.** \nThe American Academy of Arts and Sciences (AAAS) launched the Commission on the Practice of Democratic Citizenship to enable more Americans to obtain the values\, knowledge and skills needed for participation in a 21st-century democratic society. The Commission will deepen the national dialogue around democracy\, citizenship\, and community\, by exploring civic and political participation in the United States today and will set out a plan of action for promoting the values and behaviors that define effective citizenship in a diverse 21st century democracy. AAAS has selected Cleveland as a location for one of the community conversations. This is an exciting opportunity for people to contribute to a national report and recommendations about what civic and political participation and effective citizenship can and should look like. People will have time to share their experiences (both challenges and opportunities) of living in a democracy today and respond to recommendations put forth from other communities.

DESCRIPTION:This workshop is being held at the CRG Event Center. \nAddress emotional poverty and build emotional wealth in your students. \nThe workshop: \n\nProvides understandings of origins of anger\, anxiety\, and avoidance\nGives a language to talk about brain regulation\, integration\, and emotional competence\nProvides tools for educators to address and reduce anger\, anxiety\, and avoidance\nHelps educators manage the “classroom dance” that occurs between the educator and the students\nProvides the tools to motivate good behavior\nIdentifies the differences in male and female emotional processing\n\nParticipants will each receive a copy of the new book from Ruby Payne\, Emotional Poverty. Ruby will be available to sign books during the day. \n“It was one of the most riveting speeches I have ever heard you give\, and it gave us a sense of reassurance we all desperately needed. SUMMARY:Transformational Intergroup Dialogue Workshop and Facilitation Trainings
DESCRIPTION:Transformational Intergroup Dialogue Facilitation is  a three-part series designed to help practitioners create effective spaces for learning and authentic engagement across differences based on race\, gender\, socioeconomic status\, religion\, ability and sexual orientation.  Transformational Intergroup Dialogue is a social justice education approach which promotes intergroup cooperation and understanding through dialogue. Trainings have been offered in various settings across the United States over the past 3 years to support educators\, leaders\, activists\, and entrepreneurs interested in improving intergroup relations within their classrooms\, organizations\, and communities. \nThis multi-level training program integrates academic and experiential learning and intergroup dialogue practice. Participants explore personal and interpersonal capacities for diversity and intergroup facilitation\, including emotional intelligence\, relationship building and multicultural awareness. While the three workshops will primarily focus on improving the capacity for intergroup engagement\, they will include several intergroup dialogues to help participants understand the utility of dialogue as a process for individual and group development around social identity and social justice. \n This program is an interactive\, participant-focused opportunity to help improve one’s skills in facilitating and leading diverse groups within classrooms\, organizations\, and communities. This program will support practitioners in exploring\, understanding and overcoming their obstacles to intergroup engagement.​

DESCRIPTION:NCDD2018: Connecting and Strengthening Civic Innovators\nSo much of our political environment is rife with partisan rancor. Our communities are struggling with crisis after crisis. These and other factors have people across the country yearning for the ability to listen to one another with more understanding and civility\, to work more effectively across differences\, and to improve how we make decisions together and engage in our democracy. \nJust what our field specializes in. \nSo for the 2018 conference\, we are making space to dig deep into what we know about helping and healing democracy. Now is the time to bring the work of the dialogue\, deliberation\, and public engagement field into greater visibility and use. There are so many valuable processes and resources that our extended community of practice offers\, and we’d like to explore ways to make this work spread. SUMMARY:Engaging Immigrant Communities Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Description: \nImmigration is a national hot topic. During this webinar members of the Cal State East Bay community will share the responsive programs they created to engage the immigrant community and develop positive relationships across difference. \n\nIn 2014\, when a surge in the number of unaccompanied minors immigrating to the United States from Central America created a need for more support of immigrant youth\, CSUEB created an Immigrant Community Engagement course. During this course our students probe the dynamics of immigrant experiences and serve at immigrant supporting agencies.\nIn 2016-17 after a surge in federal immigration enforcement and arrests\, 200+ campus employees and students have been trained to serve as allies to support the unique needs of undocumented students on campus. Our campus also hosted a CSU systemwide Undocumented Student Resource Summit.\nIn 2017-18 our campus and community common read is In the Country We Love: My Family Divided by Diane Guerrero\, which tells the story of the author’s life after her parents were detained and deported while she was at school. Campus and community members will engage in structured conversations about immigration and engage in activities that will result in the update of the City of Hayward’s Anti-Discrimination Action Plan (ADAP).\n\nFacilitators: \nAndrea Wells is the Senior Coordinator of Operations & Partnerships in the Center for Community Engagement at Cal State East Bay. Her work focuses on establishing and sustaining community partnerships for community-based learning courses; supporting faculty teaching those courses; and maintaining a web application designed to facilitate partnership processes and collect data on community impact. She facilitated campus and community collaborations that have made Make A Difference Week and Book to Action traditions on campus. This spring\, she taught Honors Leadership and Service\, a course which introduces students to the theory and practice of civic leadership with emphasis on community engagement. \nDr. Diana Balgas is the Executive Director for Transfer Student Programs at Cal State East Bay. She has more than 30 years of experience in higher education\, as an educator and administrator. Diana has an extensive background in developing\, implementing\, and administering programs for underserved\, low-income\, and racially and ethnically diverse populations. She communicates and collaborates with units across the university to promote a supportive and nurturing campus environment for all students. In 2017\, Dr. Balgas was designated the campus liaison for undocumented students. \nDr. Duke Austin is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at Cal State East Bay. He believes that quality teaching and learning fosters intellectual empowerment and social justice. Through learner-centered pedagogy\, experiential education\, and educating for a diverse world\, he empowers his students to apply critical thinking skills to the world around them and to see the relevance of education in their own lives. In doing so\, he prepares his students to become civic leaders who actively contribute to society in intelligent and effective ways. His teaching and research focuses on the sociology of race\, class\, and gender\, immigration\, and environmental sociology\, particularly stratification in the context of environmental disasters.
