SUMMARY:ACE South Winter Summit: Tackling the Mental Health Crisis on American Campuses
DESCRIPTION:Eleven percent of college students seriously thought about attempting suicide in the past year. Of this percentage\, one in 20 made a plan to carry it out. \nThree out of 10 college students have struggled with depression in the last two weeks. \nOne in 4 students have expressed issues with anxiety. \nThese sobering statistics remind us that today’s college students struggle with a variety of mental health issues including depression\, anxiety\, and thoughts of suicide. Institutional leaders must be prepared to address mental health issues within the campus context and to create a supportive learning environment for students. Accordingly\, ACE is convening a regional community to proactively address the challenge of student mental health and how it impacts individual institutions. Learn from experienced thought leaders\, share best practices with your colleagues\, and experiment with new ideas to plan effective future responses. \n\nOver this day-and–a-half summit in New Orleans\, institutional leaders will: \n\nExamine the issues and current trends related to college student mental health;\nExplore inter- and intra-institutional partnerships to foster mental health on campus;\nConsider promising practices (and common missteps) for creating a campus environment that promotes mental health and well-being for all students; and\,\nDiscuss how different types of institutions can best engage key constituent groups (e.g.\, faculty\, staff\, students\, community members\, etc.) in both addressing mental health challenges and supporting stakeholders working with affected individuals.\n\nRegister to gain knowledge and insights to effectively address student mental health and well-being\, a critical topic for higher education administrators.

DESCRIPTION:**This is an EXTERNAL EVENT\, open this post to find registration.** \n \nFeaturing: Paul Arntson  from the Asset-Based Community Development Institute + Taylor Nelson from the Solutions Journalism Network \nClick here to sign up for the public call. \nThis month\, we’re thrilled to unite schools and community organizations on a call to examine our fundamental orientation toward service and justice. As people working in communities and with volunteers\, we’re constantly inviting others into our work: to expand our reach\, strengthen our voice\, and broaden perspectives. With each story told or invitation extended\, we contribute (often unknowingly) to larger narratives that surround social issues and those impacted by them. \nThis call will help us approach and share our work with others in a way that’s thoughtful\, strengths-driven\, and falls on the side of justice. We’ll be joined by two organizations we have long admired – each addressing these narratives in unique ways. The Asset-Based Community Development Institute created a framework that honors the gifts and contributions of every community. They believe in harnessing those assets in order to reach shared goals. The Solutions Journalism Network shapes the way that we learn about the world by supporting journalism that highlights individual and community response to challenges\, not just the challenges themselves.  Attendees can use this to inform approaches to curriculum development (write learning outcomes\, develop program descriptions\, curate materials and reading lists) and storytelling (recruit new people\, write reports\, and share photos or blogs). \nRegardless of membership with Break Away\, we’d love to have schools and organizations join us for this semester’s public call in our National Conference Call series. DESCRIPTION:Eleven percent of college students seriously thought about attempting suicide in the past year. Of this percentage\, one in 20 made a plan to carry it out. \nThree out of 10 college students have struggled with depression in the last two weeks. \nOne in 4 students have expressed issues with anxiety.​ \nThese sobering statistics remind us that today’s college students struggle with a variety of mental health issues including depression\, anxiety\, and thoughts of suicide. Institutional leaders must be prepared to address mental health issues within the campus context and to create a supportive learning environment for students. Accordingly\, ACE is convening a regional community to proactively address the​ challenge of student mental health and how it impacts individual institutions. Learn from experienced thought leaders\, share best practices with your colleagues\, and experiment with new ideas to plan effective future responses. \n\n ​Over this day-and-a-half summit in Tucson\, institutional leaders will:\n\n\nExamine the issues and current trends related to college student mental health;\nExplore inter- and intra-institutional partnerships to foster mental health on campus;\nConsider promising practices (and common missteps) for creating a campus environment that promotes mental health and well-being for all students; and\,\nDiscuss how different types of institutions can best engage key constituent groups (e.g.\, faculty\, staff\, students\, community members\, etc.) in both addressing mental health challenges and supporting stakeholders working with affected individuals.\n\nRegister to gain knowledge and insights to effectively address student mental health and well-being\, a critical topic for higher education administrators.

DESCRIPTION:As part of Campus Compact for Southern New England’s four-part series on Civic & Community Engagement\, this workshop\, hosted at MCPHS\, will focus on strategies for evaluating the impact of civic engagement initiatives on your institution including policies\, practices\, and institutional mission and culture. The workshop has the following overall goals: \n\nto examine the ways in which we define and measure institutional impacts related to civic engagement efforts: What institutional impacts are important to us? To our institutional leadership? To others?\nto strengthen our understanding/awareness of current tools and strategies for assessing institutional engagement and examine their strengths and shortcomings in assessing institutional impacts\nto consider alternative strategies for assessing institutional impacts: What questions should we be asking? What kinds of information should we be collecting? What methodologies make sense?\nto share current campus level tools/strategies\nto continue to build a network of scholars and practitioners\nto identify potential collaborative work\n\nThe workshop will include presentations\, breakout groups\, and a mix of small and large group discussion. In this session we’ll provide information on qualitative and quantitative methods for examining these outcomes\, and avenues for meaningful involvement by faculty\, staff\, administrators and others at your institution. \nLearning from each other’s experience will be critical to the day. We’ll ask participants to share tools and approaches that they have used successfully (or unsuccessfully). SUMMARY:Transformational Intergroup Dialogue Workshop and Facilitation Trainings
DESCRIPTION:Transformational Intergroup Dialogue Facilitation is  a three-part series designed to help practitioners create effective spaces for learning and authentic engagement across differences based on race\, gender\, socioeconomic status\, religion\, ability and sexual orientation.  Transformational Intergroup Dialogue is a social justice education approach which promotes intergroup cooperation and understanding through dialogue. Trainings have been offered in various settings across the United States over the past 3 years to support educators\, leaders\, activists\, and entrepreneurs interested in improving intergroup relations within their classrooms\, organizations\, and communities. \nThis multi-level training program integrates academic and experiential learning and intergroup dialogue practice. Participants explore personal and interpersonal capacities for diversity and intergroup facilitation\, including emotional intelligence\, relationship building and multicultural awareness. While the three workshops will primarily focus on improving the capacity for intergroup engagement\, they will include several intergroup dialogues to help participants understand the utility of dialogue as a process for individual and group development around social identity and social justice. \n This program is an interactive\, participant-focused opportunity to help improve one’s skills in facilitating and leading diverse groups within classrooms\, organizations\, and communities. This program will support practitioners in exploring\, understanding and overcoming their obstacles to intergroup engagement.​

DESCRIPTION:NCDD2018: Connecting and Strengthening Civic Innovators\nSo much of our political environment is rife with partisan rancor. Our communities are struggling with crisis after crisis. These and other factors have people across the country yearning for the ability to listen to one another with more understanding and civility\, to work more effectively across differences\, and to improve how we make decisions together and engage in our democracy. \nJust what our field specializes in. \nSo for the 2018 conference\, we are making space to dig deep into what we know about helping and healing democracy. Now is the time to bring the work of the dialogue\, deliberation\, and public engagement field into greater visibility and use. There are so many valuable processes and resources that our extended community of practice offers\, and we’d like to explore ways to make this work spread.
