SUMMARY:ACE South Winter Summit: Tackling the Mental Health Crisis on American Campuses
DESCRIPTION:Eleven percent of college students seriously thought about attempting suicide in the past year. Of this percentage\, one in 20 made a plan to carry it out. \nThree out of 10 college students have struggled with depression in the last two weeks. \nOne in 4 students have expressed issues with anxiety. \nThese sobering statistics remind us that today’s college students struggle with a variety of mental health issues including depression\, anxiety\, and thoughts of suicide. Institutional leaders must be prepared to address mental health issues within the campus context and to create a supportive learning environment for students. Accordingly\, ACE is convening a regional community to proactively address the challenge of student mental health and how it impacts individual institutions. Learn from experienced thought leaders\, share best practices with your colleagues\, and experiment with new ideas to plan effective future responses. \n\nOver this day-and–a-half summit in New Orleans\, institutional leaders will: \n\nExamine the issues and current trends related to college student mental health;\nExplore inter- and intra-institutional partnerships to foster mental health on campus;\nConsider promising practices (and common missteps) for creating a campus environment that promotes mental health and well-being for all students; and\,\nDiscuss how different types of institutions can best engage key constituent groups (e.g.\, faculty\, staff\, students\, community members\, etc.) in both addressing mental health challenges and supporting stakeholders working with affected individuals.\n\nRegister to gain knowledge and insights to effectively address student mental health and well-being\, a critical topic for higher education administrators.

SUMMARY:Break Away National Conference Call Series: Asset-Based and Response-Driven: Community Work\, Curriculum\, and Storytelling
DESCRIPTION:**This is an EXTERNAL EVENT\, open this post to find registration.** \n \nFeaturing: Paul Arntson  from the Asset-Based Community Development Institute + Taylor Nelson from the Solutions Journalism Network \nClick here to sign up for the public call. \nThis month\, we’re thrilled to unite schools and community organizations on a call to examine our fundamental orientation toward service and justice. As people working in communities and with volunteers\, we’re constantly inviting others into our work: to expand our reach\, strengthen our voice\, and broaden perspectives. With each story told or invitation extended\, we contribute (often unknowingly) to larger narratives that surround social issues and those impacted by them. \nThis call will help us approach and share our work with others in a way that’s thoughtful\, strengths-driven\, and falls on the side of justice. We’ll be joined by two organizations we have long admired – each addressing these narratives in unique ways. The Asset-Based Community Development Institute created a framework that honors the gifts and contributions of every community. They believe in harnessing those assets in order to reach shared goals. The Solutions Journalism Network shapes the way that we learn about the world by supporting journalism that highlights individual and community response to challenges\, not just the challenges themselves.  Attendees can use this to inform approaches to curriculum development (write learning outcomes\, develop program descriptions\, curate materials and reading lists) and storytelling (recruit new people\, write reports\, and share photos or blogs). \nRegardless of membership with Break Away\, we’d love to have schools and organizations join us for this semester’s public call in our National Conference Call series. Help us spread the word for this month’s call – open to everyone invested in community and active citizenship. \nPlease RSVP and submit your questions ahead of time. Once you sign up\, we’ll send you the call-in information and presentation materials. If you’re unable to attend\, you can still register to receive the recording and materials after the call.

SUMMARY:Placed-Based Community Engagement in Higher Education
DESCRIPTION:Part of the 2018-19 Campus Compact Webinar Series \nWidely known through the work of the Harlem Children’s Zone and the federal government’s Promise and Choice Neighborhood programs\, geographically specific community engagement initiatives have the potential to positively address the challenges of inequity and injustice within our communities. While we may be familiar with these types of place-based initiatives from non-profit organizations or governmental grants\, less is known about this type of strategy in higher education. This webinar will include a presentation of a recent national study and the facilitators’ recent book on place-based community engagement in higher education\, followed by an exploration of several of the most salient topics arising from this promising new strategy.\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nERICA YAMAMAURA\n\n\n\n\nKENT KOTH\nLearn more about the webinar series

SUMMARY:2019 Community Engagement Conference: Partnering for a Resilient and Sustainable Future

SUMMARY:ACE/AIEA Internationalization Collaborative 2019: Preparing for Tomorrow's Student
DESCRIPTION:What will be the future of internationalization in higher education?\nIn the United States\, student enrollment is reflecting more than ever a diversity of student identities and life stages —students of color\, adult learners\, single parents\, veterans\, first-generation immigrants\, and international students. How can U.S. colleges and universities recognize the complexity of their student body as a strength and integrate their varied backgrounds as a resource for global education? Looking to our international community\, what new approaches are other higher education systems adopting to internationalize? \nThese topics and more will be explored at the 2019 ACE/AIEA Internationalization Collaborative\, a one-day\, annualconference devoted to meeting the challenges of campus internationalization. The Collaborative meets in conjunction with the Association of International Education Administrators (AIEA) Annual Conference. Registration for the two events is separate\, and we strongly encourage you to attend both. \nThe design of this year’s Collaborative will include opportunities to: \n\nAdopt various methods of learning (experiential\, interactive technologies\, etc.) through which global competencies could be offered\nRethink the way global and international education can remain relevant throughout a learner’s lifetime\nConsider accessibility to global learning across a broad and diverse spectrum of learners\nUse data to reimagine and inform the student reality\n\nThroughout the Collaborative\, international campus administrators and faculty will be encouraged to collectively develop new methods and to share best practices for engaging and preparing diverse learners with the necessary global skills to prosper in and contribute to tomorrow’s world.

SUMMARY:Going Beyond Rubrics: The Impact of Community Engagement on Our Campuses
DESCRIPTION:As part of Campus Compact for Southern New England’s four-part series on Civic & Community Engagement\, this workshop\, hosted at MCPHS\, will focus on strategies for evaluating the impact of civic engagement initiatives on your institution including policies\, practices\, and institutional mission and culture. The workshop has the following overall goals: \n\nto examine the ways in which we define and measure institutional impacts related to civic engagement efforts: What institutional impacts are important to us? To our institutional leadership? To others?\nto strengthen our understanding/awareness of current tools and strategies for assessing institutional engagement and examine their strengths and shortcomings in assessing institutional impacts\nto consider alternative strategies for assessing institutional impacts: What questions should we be asking? What kinds of information should we be collecting? What methodologies make sense?\nto share current campus level tools/strategies\nto continue to build a network of scholars and practitioners\nto identify potential collaborative work\n\nThe workshop will include presentations\, breakout groups\, and a mix of small and large group discussion. In this session we’ll provide information on qualitative and quantitative methods for examining these outcomes\, and avenues for meaningful involvement by faculty\, staff\, administrators and others at your institution. \nLearning from each other’s experience will be critical to the day. We’ll ask participants to share tools and approaches that they have used successfully (or unsuccessfully). There will also be time for “beginner” and “advanced” level discussions so that our individual work can be accelerated regardless of our individual starting points.

SUMMARY:Transformational Intergroup Dialogue Workshop and Facilitation Trainings
DESCRIPTION:Transformational Intergroup Dialogue Facilitation is  a three-part series designed to help practitioners create effective spaces for learning and authentic engagement across differences based on race\, gender\, socioeconomic status\, religion\, ability and sexual orientation.  Transformational Intergroup Dialogue is a social justice education approach which promotes intergroup cooperation and understanding through dialogue. Trainings have been offered in various settings across the United States over the past 3 years to support educators\, leaders\, activists\, and entrepreneurs interested in improving intergroup relations within their classrooms\, organizations\, and communities. \nThis multi-level training program integrates academic and experiential learning and intergroup dialogue practice. Participants explore personal and interpersonal capacities for diversity and intergroup facilitation\, including emotional intelligence\, relationship building and multicultural awareness. While the three workshops will primarily focus on improving the capacity for intergroup engagement\, they will include several intergroup dialogues to help participants understand the utility of dialogue as a process for individual and group development around social identity and social justice. \n This program is an interactive\, participant-focused opportunity to help improve one’s skills in facilitating and leading diverse groups within classrooms\, organizations\, and communities. This program will support practitioners in exploring\, understanding and overcoming their obstacles to intergroup engagement.

SUMMARY:Faculty/staff tracking their engagement: Motivations and opportunities with Collaboratory
DESCRIPTION:Your institution is engaging in exciting and diverse ways throughout your community\, without being aware of the various activities and partnerships! Your data collection may be basic\, a sophisticated homegrown system\, a third party solution\, or a hybrid. How do you get those engaged to provide the data? How do you ensure all aspects of the institution are invited to participate and well-represented?\nGain insights into the common tensions and motivations of faculty and staff when they are asked to provide data on engagement activities\, as well as tools and strategies to communicate the value of and need for data to different stakeholder groups. We will also discuss best practices around the use of data\, how to minimize administrative and political costs to data collection\, and next steps your institution might pursue to successfully track community engagement data.

SUMMARY:Imagining America 2018 National Conference

The two organizations will work with local institutions and leaders in organizing this annual event. \n“Imagining America is excited to partner with Illinois Humanities and other local Chicago institutions to celebrate and learn from the city’s long history of publicly engaged scholarship and art\,” says Erica Kohl-Arenas\, Faculty Director of Imagining America. “Chicago is also an important location from which to draw attention to pressing public issues\, such as immigrant rights\, housing insecurity\, and mass incarceration\, that many communities are struggling with across the country.” \nIllinois Humanities Executive Director Angel Ysaguirre says\, “Being able to host humanists and artists who are engaged in strengthening the fabric of our communities is an exciting honor for Illinois Humanities. Imagining America provides a crucial space for considering how the humanities can serve all members of society\, as partners rather than as the purveyors of knowledge. SUMMARY:Webinar: Civic Prompts in the Major: Disciplinary Knowledge\, Democratic Culture\, and the Public Good
DESCRIPTION:AAC&U is pleased to announce the latest in a series of webinars that highlight the work being done at colleges and universities to address challenges and identify best practices for enhancing the teaching and learning experience and demonstrating the value of liberal education for work\, life\, and global citizenship. \n\nMost students have substantial exposure to civic knowledge\, values\, skills\, and hands-on learning through general education\, but the road to responsible democratic engagement too often disappears in a student’s specialized field of study. Three campus practitioners leading efforts to build strong civic learning pathways for departmental majors will describe what worked best to engage colleagues about disciplinary-driven questions of social responsibility. They will also share how they are creating more intentional designs focused on the public good in courses scaffolded across requirements for their majors. \n\nDesigned primarily for faculty\, departmental chairs\, and academic administrators\, this webinar is part of AAC&U’s larger project on incorporating civic learning in the major—Civic Prompts. \n\nParticipants will gather: \n\nA variety of practical approaches for engaging departmental colleagues in how to make civic learning and social responsibility more visible and integrated across courses in the major;\nStrategies for identifying the most salient public purposes in their fields and civic issues most urgent to explore;\nDiscipline-specific approaches to civic inquiry that yield language\, modes of analysis\, and pedagogies appropriate to their areas of specialization; and\nWays to tap both internal institutional priorities and external bodies that can serve as catalysts for reassessments\, resources\, and actions.\n\n\nThere will be time for Q&A during the webinar\, and we encourage participants to send questions in advance towebinars@aacu.org.
