SUMMARY:2018 Assessment Institute
DESCRIPTION:The Assessment Institute in Indianapolis is the nation’s oldest and largest event focused exclusively on outcomes assessment in higher education. We anticipate that some 1000 educators from virtually every state and several other countries will take part in the 2018 Institute. \nThe Assessment Institute in Indianapolis is designed to provide opportunities for (1) individuals and campus teams new to outcomes assessment to acquire fundamental knowledge about the field\, (2) individuals who have worked as leaders in outcomes assessment to share and extend their knowledge and skills\, and (3) those interested in outcomes assessment at any level to establish networks that serve as sources of support and expertise beyond the dates of the Institute. \nPlease plan to be with us in Indianapolis in October 2018! \nProposals due March 9.

SUMMARY:Imagining America 2018 National Conference
DESCRIPTION:Imagining America 2018 National Conference \nFOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE \nCHICAGO – Imagining America: Artists and Scholars in Public Life and Illinois Humanities are pleased to announce that Imagining America’s 2018 National Conference will be held October 19-21 in Chicago\, Illinois. The two organizations will work with local institutions and leaders in organizing this annual event. \n“Imagining America is excited to partner with Illinois Humanities and other local Chicago institutions to celebrate and learn from the city’s long history of publicly engaged scholarship and art\,” says Erica Kohl-Arenas\, Faculty Director of Imagining America. “Chicago is also an important location from which to draw attention to pressing public issues\, such as immigrant rights\, housing insecurity\, and mass incarceration\, that many communities are struggling with across the country.” \nIllinois Humanities Executive Director Angel Ysaguirre says\, “Being able to host humanists and artists who are engaged in strengthening the fabric of our communities is an exciting honor for Illinois Humanities. Imagining America provides a crucial space for considering how the humanities can serve all members of society\, as partners rather than as the purveyors of knowledge. We are excited to have all that energy in Chicago.”

SUMMARY:Webinar - Tackling Student Food Insecurity
DESCRIPTION:According to research recently completed by Temple University and the Wisconsin HOPE Lab\, 36% of college students today face food insecurity\, 36% report facing housing security\, and 9% report being homeless. These issues are significant barriers to student success. In this webinar\, you will learn about a variety of ways in which higher education is tackling the issue of student food insecurity. SUMMARY:Webinar: Civic Prompts in the Major: Disciplinary Knowledge\, Democratic Culture\, and the Public Good
DESCRIPTION:AAC&U is pleased to announce the latest in a series of webinars that highlight the work being done at colleges and universities to address challenges and identify best practices for enhancing the teaching and learning experience and demonstrating the value of liberal education for work\, life\, and global citizenship. \n\nMost students have substantial exposure to civic knowledge\, values\, skills\, and hands-on learning through general education\, but the road to responsible democratic engagement too often disappears in a student’s specialized field of study. Three campus practitioners leading efforts to build strong civic learning pathways for departmental majors will describe what worked best to engage colleagues about disciplinary-driven questions of social responsibility. They will also share how they are creating more intentional designs focused on the public good in courses scaffolded across requirements for their majors. \n\nDesigned primarily for faculty\, departmental chairs\, and academic administrators\, this webinar is part of AAC&U’s larger project on incorporating civic learning in the major—Civic Prompts. \n\nParticipants will gather: \n\nA variety of practical approaches for engaging departmental colleagues in how to make civic learning and social responsibility more visible and integrated across courses in the major;\nStrategies for identifying the most salient public purposes in their fields and civic issues most urgent to explore;\nDiscipline-specific approaches to civic inquiry that yield language\, modes of analysis\, and pedagogies appropriate to their areas of specialization; and\nWays to tap both internal institutional priorities and external bodies that can serve as catalysts for reassessments\, resources\, and actions.\n\n\nThere will be time for Q&A during the webinar\, and we encourage participants to send questions in advance towebinars@aacu.org.

As an AAAS Science & Technology Policy Fellow for the Department of Defense\, Dr. Patil directed new efforts to leverage social network analysis and the melding of computational and social sciences to anticipate emerging threats to the US. He has also co-chaired a major review of US efforts to prevent bioweapons proliferation in Central Asia and co-founded the Iraqi Virtual Science Library (IVSL). SUMMARY:We Are Progress: Turning Vision into Action
DESCRIPTION:We Are Progress is a series of campus-based training sessions we have put together in key cities across the country to mobilize young people toward holding their elected leaders accountable into taking a proactive role in shaping the future of progressive policy on every level. \nIn Columbus\, Ohio we are helping train local Ohio activists – including many first-time activists – on how to be effective leaders on the issues they care most about. At this one-day training\, activists will participate in a series of break out workshops that will give you the proper tools to mobilize and organize people on your campus and community.  These workshops will discuss best practices in activism and lobbying\, how to take action against federal regulations\, engage with the press\, and how to participate in civic leadership. Below you can find a more in-depth explanation about the curriculum. \nWe will also have keynote speakers and elected officials such as City Council Member Elizabeth Brown. As a young elected official\, she has played an active role in shaping Columbus’s progressive values and is a fantastic example of youth power in local leadership.

SUMMARY:Iowa Campus Compact Engaged Campus Awards and Summit
DESCRIPTION:11:30 am to 1:00 pm Engaged Campus Awards Luncheon\nConnecting our campuses and our communities in challenging (and changing) times\nWe live in challenging and changing times. Major disruptions in our economic\, social and political structures have led to questions about the purpose and meaning of many of our institutions including our colleges and universities. This upheaval can cause stress\, conflict and uncertainty. Yet\, challenge and change also can spark creativity and innovation. Following the presentation of our awards and recognition of Civic Action Plans\, keynote speaker Kent Koth will explore several emerging trends in campus and community engagement that offer significant promise for transforming our campuses\, our local communities and our nation. \nAttendees can register as individuals for $35 or purchase a table of 8 for $250. Awardees and one guest will be invited to attend free of charge. See the tickets for more information. \nAWARDS NOMINATIONS ARE DUE MARCH 30\, 2018. LEARN MORE.\n1:30-3:30 pm Deep Dive Workshop\nPlace-based community engagement as a way of transforming campus and community\nWidely known through the work of the Harlem Children’s Zone and the federal government’s Promise and Choice Neighborhood programs\, geographically specific community engagement initiatives have the potential to positively address the challenges of inequity and injustice within our communities. While we may be familiar with these types of place-based initiatives from non-profit organizations or governmental grants\, less is known about this type of strategy in higher education. Through a presentation of a recent national study and book on place-based community engagement in higher education and a discussion with several leaders of place-based efforts in higher education in Iowa\, this session will explore the potential for this strategy to transform campuses and communities. \nRegister by by April 30\, 2018.

SUMMARY:Innovation in Higher Ed Webcast
DESCRIPTION:Higher education has a reputation as being resistant to change and innovation. While no doubt true of some institutions and some individuals in higher education\, colleges and universities have a long tradition of experimentation and are now innovating now in a variety of ways. With traditional economic models and student demographics changing\, colleges that don’t try new things may well be at risk. \nThis webcast will explore different kinds of innovation (in administration and finance as well as in academics) at different types of institutions. We will also consider the culture needed to promote and sustain innovation. \nInside Higher Ed editors Scott Jaschik and Doug Lederman will lead a lively discussion on these topics May 8 at 2 PM.
