While we may be familiar with these types of place-based initiatives from non-profit organizations or governmental grants\, less is known about this type of strategy in higher education. SUMMARY:Innovation in Higher Ed Webcast
DESCRIPTION:Higher education has a reputation as being resistant to change and innovation. While no doubt true of some institutions and some individuals in higher education\, colleges and universities have a long tradition of experimentation and are now innovating now in a variety of ways. With traditional economic models and student demographics changing\, colleges that don’t try new things may well be at risk. \nThis webcast will explore different kinds of innovation (in administration and finance as well as in academics) at different types of institutions. We will also consider the culture needed to promote and sustain innovation. \nInside Higher Ed editors Scott Jaschik and Doug Lederman will lead a lively discussion on these topics May 8 at 2 PM.

DESCRIPTION:Our goal is to bring together theater practitioners\, community activists\, and inclusion-driven community members who share a commitment to social justice. \nWe aim to use theater as a tool to strategize for effective social justice in our society. Our focus is to engage the concerns of and give voice to historically marginalized communities. We understand social justice theater as a means to achieve building a just society. \nThe purpose of this conference is to create a space for deep strategizing among experts – community theater-makers\, radically inclusive theater-makers in traditional theaters\, community organizers\, artist activists\, and others. We are particularly interested in the formats of Monologue Theater\, Documentary Theater\, and Forum Theater that use first person narratives of people’s lives to build inclusive communities. \nKeynote Speaker: Ntozake Shange\, the playwright\, poet\, performer\, and creator of For colored girls who have considered suicide / When the rainbow is not enuf.

SUMMARY:Community Conversation: What Can We Do About the Opiate Epidemic?
DESCRIPTION:The Center for Civic Life at Ashland University\, the Mental Health and Recovery Board of Ashland County\, and the Ashland County Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse are sponsoring a community conversation April 21 to follow up February’s public forum on the serious issue of “What Can We Do about the Opiate Epidemic.” \nThe event\, which is free and open to the public\, will be held April 21 from 9 a.m. to noon in the Ridenour Room of Dauch College of Business and Economics at Ashland University. The agenda for the break-out sessions is: 1) A short summary of how professionals help people; 2) What else people want them to do; and 3) How citizens can help professionals. \n“We are all citizens of Ashland County. The drug epidemic affects us all. We need you\,” said Louise Fleming-Dufala\, director of Center for Civic Life. “Using the World Café model\, we will rotate through stations each half hour. You will meet face-to-face with law enforcers\, first-responders and treatment/prevention professionals.” \nFleming-Dufala said each station will have a note-taker and notes will be summarized and emailed to participants as well as public officials. “We will conclude in the Ridenour Room with suggestions for next steps\,” she said. \nAshland University\, ranked in the top tier of colleges and universities in U.S. News and World Report’s National Universities category for 2017\, is a mid-sized\, private university conveniently located a short distance from Akron\, Cleveland and Columbus\, Ohio. SUMMARY:Engaging Immigrant Communities Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Description: \nImmigration is a national hot topic. During this webinar members of the Cal State East Bay community will share the responsive programs they created to engage the immigrant community and develop positive relationships across difference. \n\nIn 2014\, when a surge in the number of unaccompanied minors immigrating to the United States from Central America created a need for more support of immigrant youth\, CSUEB created an Immigrant Community Engagement course. During this course our students probe the dynamics of immigrant experiences and serve at immigrant supporting agencies.\nIn 2016-17 after a surge in federal immigration enforcement and arrests\, 200+ campus employees and students have been trained to serve as allies to support the unique needs of undocumented students on campus. Our campus also hosted a CSU systemwide Undocumented Student Resource Summit.\nIn 2017-18 our campus and community common read is In the Country We Love: My Family Divided by Diane Guerrero\, which tells the story of the author’s life after her parents were detained and deported while she was at school. Campus and community members will engage in structured conversations about immigration and engage in activities that will result in the update of the City of Hayward’s Anti-Discrimination Action Plan (ADAP).\n\nFacilitators: \nAndrea Wells is the Senior Coordinator of Operations & Partnerships in the Center for Community Engagement at Cal State East Bay. Her work focuses on establishing and sustaining community partnerships for community-based learning courses; supporting faculty teaching those courses; and maintaining a web application designed to facilitate partnership processes and collect data on community impact. She facilitated campus and community collaborations that have made Make A Difference Week and Book to Action traditions on campus. This spring\, she taught Honors Leadership and Service\, a course which introduces students to the theory and practice of civic leadership with emphasis on community engagement. \nDr. Diana Balgas is the Executive Director for Transfer Student Programs at Cal State East Bay. She has more than 30 years of experience in higher education\, as an educator and administrator. Diana has an extensive background in developing\, implementing\, and administering programs for underserved\, low-income\, and racially and ethnically diverse populations. She communicates and collaborates with units across the university to promote a supportive and nurturing campus environment for all students. In 2017\, Dr. Balgas was designated the campus liaison for undocumented students. \nDr. Duke Austin is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at Cal State East Bay. He believes that quality teaching and learning fosters intellectual empowerment and social justice. Through learner-centered pedagogy\, experiential education\, and educating for a diverse world\, he empowers his students to apply critical thinking skills to the world around them and to see the relevance of education in their own lives. In doing so\, he prepares his students to become civic leaders who actively contribute to society in intelligent and effective ways. His teaching and research focuses on the sociology of race\, class\, and gender\, immigration\, and environmental sociology\, particularly stratification in the context of environmental disasters.

SUMMARY:Equity and Inclusion for the 1% (not THAT 1%): Student Veterans in Higher Education
DESCRIPTION:Description: Campus Compact Mountain West has been working with member campuses on an initiative called SECond Mission:Service|Education|Careers\, an effort to support access to and success in higher education for Veterans and military-affiliated students. Though only 1% of Americans serve in the armed forces\, college and university campuses have a robust population of students affiliated with the military due to the opportunities made available through the Post-911 GI Bill. This group of students is disproportionally nonwhite\, living with a service-related disability\, living in poverty\, and earning less than their peers if they’re employed. \nDuring this webinar\, we will discuss the ways in which the academic support needs of military-affiliated students align with other groups of non-traditional and adult learners. We will also highlight the ways in which student Veteran support programs have borrowed from Safe Zone and other interventions developed for LGBTQ students. Ripple Effects Mapping (REM) uses elements of Appreciative Inquiry\, mind mapping\, and qualitative data analysis to engage program participants to reflect upon and map the intended and unintended changes produced by a complex program or collaboration. Scott Chazdon\, an evaluator with the University of Minnesota’s Extension Center for Community Vitality\, will provide an in-depth description of REM’s use with collaborative community initiatives.
