SUMMARY:Inaugural Conference on Community Theater for Social Justice Action
DESCRIPTION:Our goal is to bring together theater practitioners\, community activists\, and inclusion-driven community members who share a commitment to social justice. \nWe aim to use theater as a tool to strategize for effective social justice in our society. Our focus is to engage the concerns of and give voice to historically marginalized communities. We understand social justice theater as a means to achieve building a just society. \nThe purpose of this conference is to create a space for deep strategizing among experts – community theater-makers\, radically inclusive theater-makers in traditional theaters\, community organizers\, artist activists\, and others. We are particularly interested in the formats of Monologue Theater\, Documentary Theater\, and Forum Theater that use first person narratives of people’s lives to build inclusive communities. \nKeynote Speaker: Ntozake Shange\, the playwright\, poet\, performer\, and creator of For colored girls who have considered suicide / When the rainbow is not enuf.

SUMMARY:Community Conversation: What Can We Do About the Opiate Epidemic?
DESCRIPTION:The Center for Civic Life at Ashland University\, the Mental Health and Recovery Board of Ashland County\, and the Ashland County Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse are sponsoring a community conversation April 21 to follow up February’s public forum on the serious issue of “What Can We Do about the Opiate Epidemic.” \nThe event\, which is free and open to the public\, will be held April 21 from 9 a.m. to noon in the Ridenour Room of Dauch College of Business and Economics at Ashland University. The agenda for the break-out sessions is: 1) A short summary of how professionals help people; 2) What else people want them to do; and 3) How citizens can help professionals. \n“We are all citizens of Ashland County. The drug epidemic affects us all. We need you\,” said Louise Fleming-Dufala\, director of Center for Civic Life. “Using the World Café model\, we will rotate through stations each half hour. You will meet face-to-face with law enforcers\, first-responders and treatment/prevention professionals.” \nFleming-Dufala said each station will have a note-taker and notes will be summarized and emailed to participants as well as public officials. “We will conclude in the Ridenour Room with suggestions for next steps\,” she said. \nAshland University\, ranked in the top tier of colleges and universities in U.S. News and World Report’s National Universities category for 2017\, is a mid-sized\, private university conveniently located a short distance from Akron\, Cleveland and Columbus\, Ohio. Ashland University (www.ashland.edu) deeply values the individual student and offers a unique educational experience that combines the challenge of strong\, applied academic programs with a faculty and staff who build nurturing relationships with their students.

SUMMARY:Engaging Immigrant Communities Webinar
DESCRIPTION:Description: \nImmigration is a national hot topic. During this webinar members of the Cal State East Bay community will share the responsive programs they created to engage the immigrant community and develop positive relationships across difference. \n\nIn 2014\, when a surge in the number of unaccompanied minors immigrating to the United States from Central America created a need for more support of immigrant youth\, CSUEB created an Immigrant Community Engagement course. During this course our students probe the dynamics of immigrant experiences and serve at immigrant supporting agencies.\nIn 2016-17 after a surge in federal immigration enforcement and arrests\, 200+ campus employees and students have been trained to serve as allies to support the unique needs of undocumented students on campus. Our campus also hosted a CSU systemwide Undocumented Student Resource Summit.\nIn 2017-18 our campus and community common read is In the Country We Love: My Family Divided by Diane Guerrero\, which tells the story of the author’s life after her parents were detained and deported while she was at school. Campus and community members will engage in structured conversations about immigration and engage in activities that will result in the update of the City of Hayward’s Anti-Discrimination Action Plan (ADAP).\n\nFacilitators: \nAndrea Wells is the Senior Coordinator of Operations & Partnerships in the Center for Community Engagement at Cal State East Bay. Her work focuses on establishing and sustaining community partnerships for community-based learning courses; supporting faculty teaching those courses; and maintaining a web application designed to facilitate partnership processes and collect data on community impact. She facilitated campus and community collaborations that have made Make A Difference Week and Book to Action traditions on campus. This spring\, she taught Honors Leadership and Service\, a course which introduces students to the theory and practice of civic leadership with emphasis on community engagement. \nDr. Diana Balgas is the Executive Director for Transfer Student Programs at Cal State East Bay. She has more than 30 years of experience in higher education\, as an educator and administrator. Diana has an extensive background in developing\, implementing\, and administering programs for underserved\, low-income\, and racially and ethnically diverse populations. She communicates and collaborates with units across the university to promote a supportive and nurturing campus environment for all students. In 2017\, Dr. Balgas was designated the campus liaison for undocumented students. \nDr. Duke Austin is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at Cal State East Bay. He believes that quality teaching and learning fosters intellectual empowerment and social justice. Through learner-centered pedagogy\, experiential education\, and educating for a diverse world\, he empowers his students to apply critical thinking skills to the world around them and to see the relevance of education in their own lives. In doing so\, he prepares his students to become civic leaders who actively contribute to society in intelligent and effective ways. His teaching and research focuses on the sociology of race\, class\, and gender\, immigration\, and environmental sociology\, particularly stratification in the context of environmental disasters.

SUMMARY:Equity and Inclusion for the 1% (not THAT 1%): Student Veterans in Higher Education
DESCRIPTION:Description: Campus Compact Mountain West has been working with member campuses on an initiative called SECond Mission:Service|Education|Careers\, an effort to support access to and success in higher education for Veterans and military-affiliated students. Though only 1% of Americans serve in the armed forces\, college and university campuses have a robust population of students affiliated with the military due to the opportunities made available through the Post-911 GI Bill. This group of students is disproportionally nonwhite\, living with a service-related disability\, living in poverty\, and earning less than their peers if they’re employed. \nDuring this webinar\, we will discuss the ways in which the academic support needs of military-affiliated students align with other groups of non-traditional and adult learners. We will also highlight the ways in which student Veteran support programs have borrowed from Safe Zone and other interventions developed for LGBTQ students. Finally\, we will share specific program models from SECond Mission that have made demonstrable impacts on student Veteran persistence in higher education and integration into their local civilian communities \nFacilitators: Stephanie Schooley\, Executive Director\, CCMW; Katie Kleinhesselink\, Director of Member Services\, CCMW; Vanessa Moore\, SECond Mission VISTA Leader\, CCMW

SUMMARY:The Agora Project webinar
DESCRIPTION:Coming up on Friday the 16th\, CCMW invites you to join us for the February 2018 Agora Project conversation at 11am MST. The Agora Project is a space for conversations that begin with a single question to explore. No agendas\, no Power Point slides\, no time limits before moving on to the next topic. Anyone is welcome to participate from any campus and from any community. In the meantime\, check out The Agora Project blog where we’ll post discussions\, monthly conversations\, and other thoughtful resources. \nGuiding question: What is expertise? How is local knowledge legitimized within a higher education culture that recognizes degree attainment as expertise?\n \nNo registration is required and you can join the conversation through this Zoom link: https://zoom.us/j/8593572507.  We’ll begin promptly at 11am MST but feel free to join when you can\, contribute as you feel comfortable\, and stay as long as you’d like. SUMMARY:Campus Farmer Summit: What’s Growing on Your Campus?
DESCRIPTION:The Farm at Stonehill seeks to “grow community around fresh produce” and spark those who visit the farm to think about how their food choices have local and global\, social and environmental impacts. We are pleased to be partnering with Farm to Institution New England and the Vela Foundation to host this inaugural gathering of the campus farmer community in New England.  This one-day summit will be participatory in nature and may result in the establishment of a more official “Campus Farmer Network” if this is deemed a priority by attendees.  We are part of a community of colleges with gardens or farms on or near their campuses\, and we are organizing this summit to offer campus farmers and their friends an opportunity to gather to learn “what’s growing on your campus.”

SUMMARY:Community or Political Engagement? Educating for Democracy in Troubled Times
DESCRIPTION:Description: Throughout the 30+ year history of Campus Compact\, questions have been raised about the connections between community service and political engagement\, indeed\, whether there were or should be any connections at all between the two. Over a decade ago\, in 2007\, concerned about the seeming disconnect between community and political engagement\, the Carnegie Foundation’s Political Engagement Project encouraged higher education to direct its engagement work more explicitly toward educating for participation in democracy and public life. Later that year\, CIRCLE and the Kettering Foundation published results from a study titled “Millennials Talk Politics\,” which made recommendations about how colleges and universities could better educate students for political engagement. And yet\, a decade later\, college students seem more disengaged from politics\, at least as politics is traditionally understood. Our current political landscape is full of craters\, and our public discourse has become more polarized\, with charges of “incivility” and “hate speech” being made on campuses from all sides of the political spectrum. In this webinar\, we will confront the current political climate and discuss the challenges and opportunities it presents for higher education\, as well as how our work in community engagement might foster more effective political learning and action. \nFacilitator: Rick Battistoni\, Professor of Political Science & Public and Community Service Studies\, and Director\, Feinstein Institute for Public Service\, Providence College

SUMMARY:Revive Civility webinar
DESCRIPTION:**Space is limited to 30 participants. \nOhio Campus Compact & Maine Campus Compact will co-host a 1 hour webinar by Lauren Litton & Mark Hews\, Revive Civility\, National Institute for Civil Discourse.\n\n\nExploring the Opportunity: Bringing the Initiative to Revive Civility to Your Campus \nIncivility in America has reached epidemic proportions. Disrespect contributes to feelings of disconnection\, dislike and distrust resulting in lack of engagement people have with each other\, within their community and with their government. As a counter-narrative to the disrespect that permeates our private and public spaces\, the National Institute for Civil Discourse spearheaded a national grassroots initiative to provide information about the role of civil discourse as a mechanism of change and tools to support constructive conversations. This webinar will provide an overview of tools and resources available to campuses in Ohio and Maine and explore how the initiative can collaborate with individual schools and Campus Compact to use civil discourse to bring together people of diverse viewpoints on social and political issues. \nPresenters \nMark Hews\, Maine State Coordinator\, Revive Civility \nLauren Litton\, Ohio State Coordinator\, Revive Civility
