SUMMARY:Campus Farmer Summit: What’s Growing on Your Campus?
DESCRIPTION:The Farm at Stonehill seeks to “grow community around fresh produce” and spark those who visit the farm to think about how their food choices have local and global\, social and environmental impacts. We are pleased to be partnering with Farm to Institution New England and the Vela Foundation to host this inaugural gathering of the campus farmer community in New England.  This one-day summit will be participatory in nature and may result in the establishment of a more official “Campus Farmer Network” if this is deemed a priority by attendees.  We are part of a community of colleges with gardens or farms on or near their campuses\, and we are organizing this summit to offer campus farmers and their friends an opportunity to gather to learn “what’s growing on your campus.”

SUMMARY:Community or Political Engagement? Educating for Democracy in Troubled Times
DESCRIPTION:Description: Throughout the 30+ year history of Campus Compact\, questions have been raised about the connections between community service and political engagement\, indeed\, whether there were or should be any connections at all between the two. Over a decade ago\, in 2007\, concerned about the seeming disconnect between community and political engagement\, the Carnegie Foundation’s Political Engagement Project encouraged higher education to direct its engagement work more explicitly toward educating for participation in democracy and public life. Later that year\, CIRCLE and the Kettering Foundation published results from a study titled “Millennials Talk Politics\,” which made recommendations about how colleges and universities could better educate students for political engagement. And yet\, a decade later\, college students seem more disengaged from politics\, at least as politics is traditionally understood. Our current political landscape is full of craters\, and our public discourse has become more polarized\, with charges of “incivility” and “hate speech” being made on campuses from all sides of the political spectrum. DESCRIPTION:Can Higher Education Recapture the Elusive American Dream?\nAAC&U’s 2018 Annual Meeting will address higher education’s role in the American Dream in the face of a narrative arguing that the two have become disconnected. On a societal level\, the American Dream has long been associated with improvement in quality of life from generation to generation. But American dreams are also unique\, personal\, and hopeful—affected by each individual’s socioeconomic class or cultural background; educational\, professional\, and personal aspirations; immigration status or race. The American Dream may also reflect the desire for a safer home or safer workplace\, but today\, it is more closely aligned with economic mobility than with a life well lived. We\, as educators\, must make a strong case for higher education as a pathway to the fully realized American Dream for all students\, serving as a catalyst for economic success\, democratic vitality\, and social participation.

SUMMARY:Webinar - From Research to Action: Findings from a System-wide STEM Service-Learning Research Study
DESCRIPTION: The United States’ ability to contribute to\, and innovate in\, Science\, Technology\, Engineering\, and Mathematics (STEM) industries within the global market is of national concern. As the largest\, most diverse and one of the most affordable university systems in the country\, the California State University (CSU)\, with twenty-three campuses\, 474\,000 students\, and 49\,000 faculty and staff\, plays a critical role in STEM degree completion. The CSU serves more than 125\,000 STEM students\, and graduated 20\,201 STEM baccalaureates in 2016. \nBuilding on its 20-year commitment to ensure that all students have the opportunity to participate in community service\, service learning (SL)\, deemed academically appropriate by faculty\, the CSU Office of the Chancellor conducted a systemwide research study of service-learning courses in STEM fields from fall 2014 thru fall 2016. The study examined the impact service learning has on common measures of student academic achievement (e.g. GPA\, retention and graduation)\, career development and civic engagement. The presentation will review these research findings\, share how the CSU is using the findings to enhance and improve service-learning STEM courses\, and engage participants in a discussion about how these research findings can be applied to their own institutions. \nFacilitators: \nJudy Botelho\, Director\, Center for Community Engagement\, California State University\, Office of the Chancellor – For 20 years\, Judy Botelho has been leading and implementing innovative service learning and community engagement initiatives that support the unique needs and interests of higher education institutions and their surrounding communities. Since 2010\, her office has successfully supported the expansion of service learning in STEM disciplines by 86%. As the director of the CSU Center for Community Engagement (CCE)\, Judy delivers\, inspires and sustains high-quality learning opportunities by promoting programs and initiatives that create inclusive spaces for authentic relationships to occur\, and that honor personal growth\, self-empowerment and life-long learning. CCE has a successful history of garnering and managing external grant funding ($15 million since 1998) to support and advance service-learning programs across the system. Botelho has worked closely with first year experience program directors and undergraduate research programs at all 23 institutions\, and supports a community-based research network consisting of more than 600 faculty and community partners from the CSU\, University of California system and private California institutions. \nDr. Rebecca M. Eddy\, President\, Cobblestone Applied Research & Evaluation\, Inc.- Dr. Rebecca Eddy has conducted evaluation or applied research studies on numerous projects including Service Learning Transforming Educational Models in STEM through the CSU Chancellor’s Office\, funded by Learn and Serve America through which she also co-authored New partnerships for a new economy: A guide to effectively prepare STEM students for careers of choice (Podolske\, Dixon\, Langford & Eddy\, 2011). Other clients include programs funded by the National Science Foundation; U. S. Department of Education Title III and Title V; National Institutes of Health; and Howard Hughes Medical Institute. Dr. Eddy also trains professional evaluators from around the world as a faculty member at Claremont Graduate University in the Advanced Certificate in Evaluation Program. Under her leadership\, Cobblestone has developed many instruments to test constructs of interest for programs such as student civic engagement\, student interest in STEM majors and careers\, as well as established a number of procedures to monitor program implementation and outcomes. \nMs. Nicole Galport\, Research Associate\, Cobblestone Applied Research & Evaluation\, Inc. – Nicole Galport is a research associate at Cobblestone and a doctoral student at Claremont Graduate University (CGU)\, where she is pursuing her degree in Psychology with a concentration in Evaluation and Applied Research Methods. As an evaluator\, she has worked on a range of projects throughout the education spectrum including the evaluation of STEM education programs and retention/graduation initiatives. As a doctoral student\, Nicole’s research focuses on evaluator competency development\, professional development\, and training programs. Nicole received her B.A. in Psychology and Leadership and Organizational Studies from Chapman University and M.A. in Psychology with a co-concentration in Positive Organizational Psychology and Evaluation from CGU.

SUMMARY:Civic Action Plan - What Have We Learned?
DESCRIPTION: Utah Campus Compact was the first Campus Compact affiliate to achieve full adoption of the Civic Action Statement by all of its member institutions. In preparation\, UTCC offered a Civic Action Planning Institute in February 2016 that kick started the civic action planning process for eight campuses. This webinar will provide an opportunity for participants hear from three institution types about what has been learned through this process and how the Civic Action Plans are moving the community engagement agendas forward for these campuses. \nFacilitators: \nLucy Smith\, Engaged Learning Coordinator\, Salt Lake Community College – Lucy holds a Master of Science Degree from the University of Utah in Parks\, Recreation\, and Tourism with an emphasis in Experiential Education. Lucy manages the Engaged Learning Program focused on service-learning and study abroad. Her focus areas include; faculty professional development\, curriculum design\, service-learning pedagogy\, High-Impact Practices\, and global learning. Lucy’s leads a cross functional team focused on assessing the SLCC General Education civic engagement student learning outcome via ePortfolio. Lucy is also the lead for the Campus Compact Civic Action planning team focused on institutionalizing civic and community engagement at SLCC. \nBrenda Marsteller Kowalewski\, Associate Provost\, High Impact Programs and Faculty Development\, Weber State University – Brenda received a B.A. in Sociology from Hofstra University\, and an M.A. and Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Maryland at College Park. Brenda has been at Weber State University since 1995 wherein she was recognized as a Presidential Distinguished Professor of Sociology in 2009 and co-founded and directed the Center for Community Engaged Learning as a Student Affairs-Academic Affairs integrated partnership from 2006-2015. Dr. Kowalewski also served as the principle writer for both of Weber State’s successful applications for the Carnegie Classification for Community Engagement (2008\, 2015) and is currently leading the process of writing a collaborative Civic Action Plan among seven anchor institutions\, fourteen ally organizations and residents in the East Central Ogden neighborhood. Much of Dr. Kowalewski’s recent research and writings have focused on the use of community engaged learning as a teaching tool\, institutionalizing community engagement at the university\, and understanding the community perspective in engagement activities. \nKristin Brubaker\, Community Engaged Learning Coordinator\, Utah State University – Kristin focuses on building a culture of engagement on campus at Utah State University. Kristin was hired to assist in preparing the institution for the 2020 Carnegie Community Engagement Classification and has led the university in completion and implementation of their 2017 Civic Action Plan. Prior to joining the Center for Community Engagement at USU\, Kristin ran two AmeriCorps programs in California which provided capacity building support for local governments to address climate change.

SUMMARY:THE BIRTH\, GROWTH AND LIFE OF A MOVEMENT
DESCRIPTION:Presented by the Greater Cincinnati Service-Learning Network.\nCommunity engagement has deep roots in higher education. But over the last 40 or so years\, it has been reimagined with more structure\, including principles and pedagogy for service learning. As the ideas took hold\, the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching created its Community Engagement Classification to assess what’s happening and provide a common framework for best-practice community engagement. Universities began setting up community engagement and service learning offices to assure institutional support. James Votruba was involved in these efforts early in his career at Michigan State University and then\, as president of Northern Kentucky University (1997-2012)\, he built community engagement into the institution’s DNA. A passionate\, effective leader for this approach to education\, Dr. Votruba has become a national voice for community engagement in higher ed. He will provide an overview of university community engagement\, its history\, and the factors associated with success and failure. He’ll offer some cautions but also some inspirations. Q&A and discussion will be part of this presentation. Dr. Votruba is the co-author of Becoming an Engaged Campus: A Practical Guide for Institutionalizing Public Engagement (Jossey-Bass\, 2011).

Continued tragic events on campus only serve to reinforce the need for expanded services. \nAs a nation\, it is crucial that we come together to help raise the awareness of mental health on college campuses and work together to identify and promulgate best practices and techniques that can be used to help meet the rising demand for mental health\, while at the same time\, build a culture of early intervention and prevention. \nInstitutions of higher learning face budget limitations\, staff shortages\, and other challenges in addressing the mental health and wellness of their students. Together\, students\, health professionals\, and campus leadership can build awareness\, drive public policy\, and build innovative solutions ensure the mental health and wellness of our nation’s college students. \nThe American College Health Association\, in partnership with the American College Health Foundation\, is pleased to collaborate with leading mental health and higher education organizations on its inaugural symposium.
