SUMMARY:COVID-19\, Systemic Racism\, and the Responses of HBCUs: A Virtual Town Hall Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Speakers: \nMakola M. Abdullah\, President of Virginia State University  \nMary Schmidt Campbell\, President of Spelman College \nC. Reynold Verret\, President of Xavier University of Louisiana \nGilda Barabino\, President-elect of Olin College of Engineering (Moderator)\nHistorically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) are among the nation’s most vital and vibrant institutions\, serving the educational needs of hundreds of thousands of students\, advancing the full spectrum of human knowledge\, and invigorating the cultural\, social\, and economic horizons of the regions they serve. And today\, these universities are at the forefront of the fight against COVID-19\, researching treatments\, keeping their states and communities informed\, and treating patients at academic medical centers.  They are also at the forefront of the nation’s struggles against institutionalized discrimination\, systemic inequality\, and anti-Black racism that are being brought to bear every day in the forms of demonstrations and advocacy in most U.S. communities. \nHow have HBCUs responded to the COVID-19 pandemic and to the recent events surrounding the murder of George Floyd?  As HBCU presidents look toward resuming in-person classes in the fall\, what have they learned from the COVID-19 crisis\, how will their institutions evolve as a result\, and what might that mean for the future of HBCUs in America?  How will HBCUs adapt to the serious financial challenges likely to arise in states and the nation in the months ahead as a consequence of COVID-19? What are HBCU campus leaders doing in preparation for a stronger and higher-profile role in terms of advocacy and leadership in directly addressing anti-Black racism in this country? \nPlease join the presidents of three of the nation’s premier HBCUs as they discuss COVID-19 and issues of racial injustice. This event is hosted by the National Academies’ Board on Higher Education and Workforce and Issues in Science and Technology and sponsored by the Kresge Foundation and the U.S. Department of Defense HBCU/MI Program. \nPlease contact John Veras (jveras@nas.edu) for questions.

SUMMARY:8th International Symposium on Service-Learning (ISSL)
DESCRIPTION:Critical Service-Learning Across the Globe: Transforming Teaching into Social Action\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nUniversity of Nicosia\, June 9 – 12 \, 2020 \nSYMPOSIUM PURPOSE \nTransformation has become a central discussion theme in the higher education landscape worldwide. Forecasts reveal that higher education institutions might become virtual entities that compete for survival\, which will render face-to-face interaction of the lecture hall redundant. \nOut-of-classroom learning spaces will likely become more important as students will learn in their own communities. Service-learning is a transformative pedagogy that emphasizes out of classroom experiences as a learning space\, the community as a textbook and where theory becomes practice. \nThe purpose of the 8th International Symposium on Service-Learning is to focus on transitions in higher education and the role that critical service-learning plays in social transformation. One of the main areas of focus will be on student and faculty delivery of critical service-learning experiences and becoming agents of positive change for their communities and universities. We will learn more about the significant role that service-learning plays in students becoming more engaged and active citizens\, faculty teaching in more critical and collaborative ways\, and the community growing into living knowledge incubators. These focal points will be threaded throughout a variety of presentation types and formats to allow for meaningful dialogue among academics\, community partners\, students\, and other professionals.

SUMMARY:Pen to Paper Writing Retreat
DESCRIPTION:A retreat focused on preparing scholars to publish their community engaged work. \nPEN TO PAPER 2020 JUST ANNOUNCED! REGISTRATION OPENS MARCH 16\, 2020. \n\nPen to Paper is an academic writing retreat designed to provide time\, space\, and resources to guide faculty\, professional staff\, graduate students\, and community partners working on manuscripts related to service-learning and community engagement. \nThe two and a half-day retreat provides participants with time to discuss ideas with and receive feedback from editors\, receive mentoring from retreat facilitators\, share ideas with peers\, and write. \nEach year attendance is intentionally kept to a minimum in order to foster personal connections between participants\, editors\, and senior faculty coaches. The small group also provides the space participants need to focus on engaged scholarship. \nThe Retreat is organized in such a way as to offer participants two tracks—the Ready to Publish track and Ready to Write track. \n\nThe Ready to Publish track is for those who have a complete or nearly complete manuscript. These participants will receive feedback from journal editors and learn more about the various avenues available to publish their work.\nThe Ready to Write track is for those whose research is complete or nearly complete and have a writing plan\, but who have not yet begun the writing process. These participants will focus on developing their writing strategy and receive guidance as they begin the writing process.\n\nIndiana Campus Compact encourages faculty\, community engagement professionals\, graduate students\, and community members who are interested in further developing their community engagement practices and research methodology to attend the Colloquium on High-Impact Community Engagement Practices before attending Pen to Paper. \nPen to Paper 2020 will take place Monday\, May 18 to Wednesday May 20\, 2020 at an outdoor education center in east-central Michigan. Participants will enjoy either single or double-occupancy\, modest hotel-style accommodations situated on a wooded 1\,100-acre property. This serene setting offers opportunity for participants to focus on their writing.
