Charting a Course on the Pathway to Community Engagement: An Inventory and Action Plan for Engaged Campuses

November 29, 2017 @ 8:00 am - November 30, 2017 @ 5:00 pm

Eager to help your institution deepen civic learning and community engagement efforts?  Join us in beautiful Vancouver, WA, just north of Portland, OR, for a two-day Institute to review your current efforts and build strategy for the future. You will receive your institution’s results of a comprehensive inventory of current practice and infrastructure, benefit from personal interaction with those working to advance higher education community engagement, and enjoy the “gift of time away” for your team of two.

This Institute derives from the research of presenters John Saltmarsh and Marshall Welch to understand the purpose, process and programs of Centers for Community Engagement. Together they created a program assessment tool for strategic planning and program development, and to help plan for and apply to the Carnegie Classification for Community Engagement.

Who is Invited

  • Teams of two from higher education institutions with an existing Center for Community Engagement (or similar)
  • An ideal team is the director of the Center and his/her immediate supervising administrator—or those who have the ability to review existing work, plan for the future, and mobilize people and resources once home
    • NOTE:  It is critical that the right “team” attends. You will learn no matter who is here, and it will be valuable. But because the two of you will be those implementing the action plan you devise at the Institute, you really need someone with you who realistically can work to help your plan take root at your institution.

 Additional Information

  • Cost for the Institute = $500 per person covers the Institute, lunches on November 29 and 30, and dinner on November 29
  • Transportation = Plan to fly into PDX, in Portland, OR
  • Participants receive a reduced hotel rate of $141 each night — single or double occupancy — at The Heathman Lodge
  • Participants receive a copy of Marshall Welch’s book, Engaging Higher Education
  • Plan to stay an extra day for the Preparing for Carnegie Classification workshop — separate registration through Campus Compact
