Inaugural Conference on Community Theater for Social Justice Action

April 27, 2018 @ 8:00 am - April 28, 2018 @ 5:00 pm

Our goal is to bring together theater practitioners, community activists, and inclusion-driven community members who share a commitment to social justice.

We aim to use theater as a tool to strategize for effective social justice in our society. Our focus is to engage the concerns of and give voice to historically marginalized communities. We understand social justice theater as a means to achieve building a just society.

The purpose of this conference is to create a space for deep strategizing among experts – community theater-makers, radically inclusive theater-makers in traditional theaters, community organizers, artist activists, and others. We are particularly interested in the formats of Monologue Theater, Documentary Theater, and Forum Theater that use first person narratives of people’s lives to build inclusive communities.

Keynote Speaker: Ntozake Shange, the playwright, poet, performer, and creator of For colored girls who have considered suicide / When the rainbow is not enuf.
