On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, 56 people volunteered to create meal kits for students in need for the National Day of Service at the University of Akron. The kits provided students with a day’s meal and resources to connect with the University’s Campus Cupboard/ZipAssist.  Two types of kits were created, one with shelf stable items to be placed at the six grab and go pantry locations around campus, and one with refrigerated items along with a recipe page with meal ideas. The grab and go locations enable students to have their needs met on their schedule, if they don’t have the time to visit the walk-in cupboard.

This project was made possible through a grant from ServeOhio, the outstanding work of Americorps member Sophie and the ZipAssist team, and the amazing volunteers who assembled 120 meal kits in less than 15 minutes!

Since the meal kits were assembled so quickly, ZipAssist staff retrieved some fabric bundles from their office for the volunteers to turn into blankets. These blankets went to the walk-in cupboard for students in need and those in emergency housing. By the end of the Day of Service, volunteers completed 120 meal kits, 20 fleece tie blankets, and stocked a grab and go location!
